When Enabling Children Goes too Far

College Admissions Bribery scandal

The Ivy League Schools Admission Scandal 2019

Most parents out of love for their kids would do almost anything to ensure their progress in life. But where do you draw the line?

It’s appaling to know how far some people will go to get the best for their children, even to the extent of breaking the law! This is exactly what the thirty-three parents in today’s post did. An action that has ‘deservedly’ gotten them into trouble with the law

I was shocked when I read about the 2019 college admissions bribery scandal in March this year. Shocked because the International media makes it seem like corruption can only be found in certain parts of the world. This is why we need to do more to change the narrative.

The Scandal

The scandal which has been named “Operation Varsity Blues” involved some Hollywood celebrities and prominent business leaders influencing their children’s admission into top American Universities.

It is a criminal investigation that implicated about thirty-three parents of college applicants. They were accused to have paid over $25 million to ‘William Rick Singer‘ (organiser of the scheme) between 2011-2019, to fraudulently inflate test scores and bribe college officials.

William Rick Singer

Federal prosecutors alleged a college-admission scheme that involved:

  • bribing exam administrators to facilitate cheating on college and university entrance exams;
  • bribing coaches and administrators of elite universities to nominate unqualified applicants as elite recruited athletes, thus facilitating the applicants’ admission
  • Using a charitable organisation to conceal the source and nature of bribery payments.

Wealthy parents paid Singer to illegally arrange to have their children admitted to elite schools by bribing admissions testing officials, athletics staff, and coaches at universities.

Payments were made to Key Worldwide Foundation – a nonprofit organisation owned by Singer and previously granted 501(c)(3) status; that status allowed him to avoid federal income taxes on the payments, while parents could deduct their “donations” from their own personal taxes.

Parents Involved

Here are some of the wealthy patents involved in the scandal. The most popular faces are that of actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin. The full list of parents involved can be found here.

Jane Buckingham – author and the founder of the boutique marketing agency Trendera. Her clients include Target, Nickelodeon, Hearst, StubHub, and Hilton Worldwide.

Robert Flaxman; a graduate of the University of Southern California and the chief executive of Crown Realty & Development Inc.

Mossimo Giannulli; fashion designer whose name became a house brand at Target. His wife, Lori Loughlin is an actor best known for playing Aunt Becky on the sitcom Full House and its more recent Netflix spinoff Fuller House. The two are alleged to have paid bribes totaling $500,000 to get their two influencer daughters accepted to USC as “recruits to the USC crew team—despite the fact that they did not participate in crew.”

Douglas Hodge – former CEO of Pacific Investment Management Co. Pimco, one of the largest bond fund managers in the world.

Felicity Huffman is an Emmy-winning actor best known for her role on Desperate Housewives. She’s alleged to have paid $15,000 as a “purported charitable contribution to participate in the college entrance exam cheating scheme on behalf of her eldest daughter.” Though mentioned in the indictment, her husband, actor William H. Macy has not been charged because of lack of evidence.

Stephen Semprevivo is an executive at Cydcor, a “privately held provider of outsourced sales teams” who “agreed to bribe…the Georgetown tennis coach…to designate his son as a tennis recruit (despite the fact that he did not play tennis competitively). He did this to facilitate his admission to Georgetown,” according to the indictment.

Devin Slone is the founder and CEO of waterTALENT, a “provider of drinking water and wastewater systems, among other businesses.” In order to get his son into USC, he apparently had his son photoshopped onto photos of actual water polo-players.😱

Homayoun Zadeh is an associate professor of dentistry at USC. He is alleged to have presented his daughter as an elite lacrosse player. In an email to Singer, Zadeh wrote that his daughter worried that “she did not get in on her own merits.”

Schools involved

There are eight Universities implicated in the ‘Varsity Blues Scandal’.These 8 are being investigated by the U.S Education Department.

The schools involved are Yale, Stanford, Wake Forest, Georgetown University, University of San-Diego. The Others are University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Texas at Austin.

A lot has happened since the scandal broke in March. Some of the parents have been arraigned and have pleaded guilty and some of them have lost their jobs. Indicted school coaches have been dismissed and suspended and some of the children have been expelled.

Actress Lori Loughlin who was a regular on the Hallmark channel has been relieved of her job. Hallmark quickly parted ways with the actress as did Netflix. She was on the ‘Fuller House’ show on Netflix until the scandal broke. Netflix has confirmed that she will not be returning to the show.

Mr McGlashan’s job was terminated by his equity firm TPG while Gordon Caplan was suspended and stripped as a partner of his law firm. Doug Hodge was asked to step down as board member of two Californian private schools he was involved in.

Dr Hamayoun Zadeh, a prominent Californian dentist has been placed on administrative leave from his position as the director of the Laboratory for Immunoregulation and Tissue Engineering at the University of Southern California and has lost 3 book contracts.

Gregory Abbot, a beverage magnate who has pleaded guilty to his charge was according to the police, beaten up by his rapper son ‘Malcolm Abbot’ who raps under the name ‘Billa’. 😱

Malcolm has also used the criminal case against his parents to sell T-shirts on his Instagram page.🤑

Coaches involved in the scandal like the Stanford Sailing coach have been fired with others placed on leave. Some others are facing disciplinary actions. According to NYTimes, prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of assets from Gordon Ernst. Ernst is the former head tennis coach at George Town University.

A television show based on the scandal is already been developed. There are also talks of a movie on it – oh Hollywood!🙄

How Much Did the Children Know?

Not all the children were aware of their parent’s actions. One of them, son of Marketing Executive, Jack Buckingham actually wrote a piece in the Hollywood reporter condemning his mum’s actions.

Jack and Jane Buckingham

Jack Buckingham in a statement had this to say, “I have been advised not to speak on the matter at hand but what I will say is this,” before writing: “I know there are millions of kids out there both wealthy and less fortunate who grind their ass off just to have a shot at the college of their dreams. I am upset that I was unknowingly involved in a large scheme that helps give kids who may not work as hard as others an advantage over those who truly deserve those spots.”

Isabelle Henriquez

Isabelle Enriquez was very much aware of the action taken on her behalf and even gloated with her mum about getting answers to her SAT tests.

Intensive Parenting

The scandal has brought to the forefront the extent some parents will go to clear away any obstacle to their children’s success. Even when it requires crossing ethical and legal boundaries.

There are different terms for that kind of parenting today, ‘intensive parenting, Helicopter parenting’, ‘Snow-plough parenting’.

Helicopter parenting is simply the practice of hovering anxiously near one’s children, monitoring all their activities. This is not altogether bad it could, however, get out of hand if not watched.

Snowplow parents are parents that clear any obstacle in their child’s path to success so they don’t encounter failure. This form is more extreme than Helicopter parenting.

To think this scandal began with a financial executive, Marrie Tobin being investigated on an unrelated securities fraud case. He gave the FBI a tip about a coach asking him for a bribe to get his daughter into Yale. 🤔

The coach was subsequently recorded accepting bribe from Mr Tobin. And so began the unravelling of the biggest education scandal the U.S has ever seen.

It is a parents job to support their children, but it should be done with wisdom to prepare them for the future. Children should be allowed to develop problem-solving skills so that they can cope in times of crisis.

They should be allowed to make their own mistakes and have challenges as this will help them cope in future and in situations when mum and dad are unable to clear the obstacle.

As a psychologist, Ms Lythcott-Haims rightly said, “The point is to prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid”. When in helping our children advance we intentionally break the law, what are we then teaching them about morale and ethics? How are we helping them prepare for the future, will they be able to cope in trying circumstances especially when their parents are not available?

When does parenting become over-parenting? how long are you willing to go for your children? Let’s discuss.

Aunty Lulu.

Google Search

Google search

This morning, I was chatting with my boys, as we normally do Whilst getting ready for school when my eldest shocked me by saying “mum, I looked you up on Google yesterday” 😵. “What!” I said.

He explained that during their free time, he and his friends decided to search for their parents’ name on google. My mind went blank at first… What a let down that would have been- cause he wouldn’t have found anything – I thought. “So what did you see,” I asked anyway. He was smiling at me as he told me how he found information about my book, saw a lovely picture of me and he told his friends his mum is an author…

My mind went back to the 1st time he saw a copy of ‘Mum, My Superhero” and how proud he was. He asked me if he could sell some copies to his friends so he could make some money 😎. That day was one of my happiest, I’ll add him telling me how he read about my book on google to the list.

I’d never searched my name on google before that day because, for a long time, I’ve felt like an underachiever. Even after writing this beautiful book, I didn’t feel a lot better about myself. I thank God for using my Son to open my eyes to see myself in a better light and appreciate his grace upon my life.

So of course immediately we got in the car (hubby was driving) I searched for my name and I saw what he saw. He searched for Abi Adewoye (people call me Abi here in the UK as my husband did not want me to go by my usual ‘Bimbo’ because of its derogatory meaning in English). It’s basically just pages where you can buy my book, my website URL and a few images. But I was content. This is only the beginning. I hope the next time he checks, they’ll be more ‘inspiring’ information about his mum on google.

Responsibilty to Children

As parents, we have to be mindful of our actions and even utterances because, nowadays, everything ends up online. What will your child see when they search your name online? Is it something they’ll be proud to share with their friends? Or information that will embarrass them and scar them forever…

Remember, children look up to their parents and also tend to copy them. No one in this world is perfect, but we can all try to live a life that our children are proud of, and can emulate.

Now I know I have to work harder not just for myself, but for these two and others like them who God has put in our care with a responsibility to guide and lead in the right direction.

Mum My Superhero

So have you bought the book? Remember it’s the perfect gift for birthdays, anniversaries, mothers day etc. Do you have a friend or sister who is overwhelmed? Motherhood is hard work and can be quite exhausting, why not get them a copy of the book as a gift. Reading the book will cheer them up and so will the fact that they’re in your thoughts.

Please follow this link or 👇🏾 for purchase options and you can get copies directly from me. May I implore you to please leave a review on any of this sites:

Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. You cannot begin to imagine how much it means to me, you guys rock 👌🏾.

Aunty Lulu

Mum, My Superhero has to be the best book I’ve read about the realities of motherhood.
Written in simple language, and clearly from the heart of a mother, the book documents the daily sacrifices and the never-ending jobs of mothers across the world. It also captures our struggles and skills of time and people management we seem to have been born with…in a fun way too!
If ever you could take a break from ‘duty’ and bask in the cape of a superhero so deserved, or simply for the pleasure of reading a good book, then this is the book to pick up.

Friendship and loyalty – The story of Nike and Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is one of the most famous athletes of all time. He became famous because he began his career as the youngest man ever (21yrs), and the first African American to win the US Masters.

Never stop Chasing your crazy dream #justdoit

Tiger went on to have a very impressive career as the highest ranking golfer from August 1999 to September 2004. He was a major dominating figure in golf as of that time, winning 13 major golf championships.

Woods was courted by the best brands in the world and he signed millions of dollars representing brands such as Nike, Accenture, General Motors, American Express, At&T, Gatorade, Gilette etc.

Following Wood’s fall from grace in 2009 – as a result of a sex scandal, most of the brands that endorsed him dropped him, while some waited for his contract to expire and did not renew it. Only 2 brands kept him on, Nike and Electronic Art. It has been reported that Nike suffered a shareholders loss of between $5billion and $12 billion but they still stuck by him and herein lies our lesson for today. 😊

Nike is generally known for that, they tend to stick to their ambasdadors in bad times (as long as they did not do anything illegal). Be like Nike 😉.

Reading the Nike/Woods story took my mind to friendship – the great friendships I have and still enjoy and the ones that I’ve let go of, albeit with lessons.

The best test of friendship is hardship, or a low period. That’s when you know your real friends, as it is frequently said, “success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan”.

Success is sweet and certainly has many friends. The moment an individual falls from grace, friendships start to wither. You can ask people that have occupied positions of power before, or celebrities in the limelight, once you lose your position or social status, the invitations stop coming in, the phone calls and visits as well.

That is why it is important to always know who your real friends are. Nike stuck with Tiger through his personal and medical problems and they are better for it.
Thanks to the iconic swoosh symbol prominently featured on Woods’s hat, shirt, pants and shoes, the Masters’ win of April 2019, is worth about $22,540,000 to Nike, according to Apex Marketing data.

Did they capitalise on his win – yes, did they deserve to, absolutely. They stuck with him at his lowest I see nothing wrong in making some good money from his amazing come back.

Friendship should be about seeing the best in others and believing in them, despite their mistakes. It is about not deserting people at their lowest times.

Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between people. There are different forms of friendships, but a good friendship involves kindness, love, loyalty, forgiveness, sympathy, empathy, trust and compassion.

Friendship is a very important part of human relationship. We start making friends from toddlers, up until we exit the earth. Friendships’ characteristics change with different stages of our lives. It evolves from just sharing common activities as children to it becoming more about a common interest, giving and sharing as adolescents to more serious aspects like companionship and emotional support as older adults. Friendship always remains a key aspect of our life and existence.

Friendship is not a ‘must’ but it certainly does the soul some good to have a healthy friendship. It is often said that if you want a good friend, be one. Also, Seek for good traits in people and be very careful because not everyone has good intentions. Some people will seek out your friendship just for what they can get from you, their friendship is not genuine. Such people can be described as fair-weather friends”.

“There are friends who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother”

Proverbs 18:24

Fairweather friends

So, what kind of friend are you? Are you one that is there for the good times and disappears at the first sign of trouble? That is how fair weather friends behave.

A Fairweather friend is a person whose friendship cannot be relied on in times of difficulty. The Cambridge dictionary describes a fair-weather friend – as someone who is a good friend when it is easy to be one and who stops being one when you are having problems.

Loyalty is one of the most essential ingredients of friendship. I’m not encouraging blind loyalty, there are some things that should not be condoned. However, a friend that shows up only for the good time stinks. Lots of people expect loyalty but are not ready to practise it. If you want a friend, be a friend.

Life can really be challenging, having one or two (could be more) loyal friends certainly makes it easier. Loyalty in friendship means:

  • Being honest and authentic: it’s great to have a friend and be a friend who can say it as it is. Tell your friend when their actions are wrong and commend when they are right. It’s great to have a friend who will want you to know the truth, no matter what. It is giving an honest opinion, whether your friend will like it or not.
  • Share happiness: a loyal friend should genuinely be happy whenever good things happen in their friends’ life.
  • A loyal friend does not do conditional friendship. They are there to stay, it should not be a “rub my back I rub yours” situation. A loyal friend is there for the good and bad not for what they can get. They comfort, cheer and encourage.
  • Defend and support: A loyal friend will defend you when you’re not there. A loyal friend will also stick by you when you find yourself in a bad situation, even if it’s your fault. They’ll tell you how you messed up but will help to find a solution. They don’t gossip behind your back or indulge people who gossip about you.
  • Loyal friends are impartial. They love you for who you are irrespective of how you look or your background. They accept you for who you are.

Loyalty is an integral part of friendship, what is friendship if there is no loyalty? The Stanford encyclopedia of philosophy puts it this way -“Loyalty is usually seen as a virtue, albeit a problematic one”. Being a loyal friend does not mean becoming a walk over. If loyalty is not appreciated or reciprocated, it should be reconsidered.

There should always be room for mistakes in friendships because being human, we are bound to err, friendship is all about forgiving. There should also be boundaries, and care should be taken so that one’s loyalty and devotion is not taken for granted.

Let’s try to be loyal friends, everyone could do with a loyal friend in their corner. 😘

Aunty Lulu.

Hello fashionistas 😉, The MET Gala held last night and as usual, the ‘A’ list crowd of celebrities and socialites were all out to play. I did miss Rihanna on the MET gala carpet as I’ve now become fond of her outrageous and interesting MET gala outfits.

If you’re wondering what the MET Gala is and why there’s always so much fuss about it, I’ve got you 😉.

What is the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is an annual symphony of art, fashion, film, and music where the most renowned members of artistic industries come together for the museum’s latest exhibition launch.

It was Founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert in 1948 – then dubbed “The Party of the Year” – to encourage donations from New York’s high society for the Costume Institute.

The annual Costume Institute Gala is now held on the first Monday in May by the New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and has become one of the most significant events in the fashion calendar.

On this day, artists, models, musicians and actors come together to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute and for the unveiling of the fashion institute’s blockbuster exhibition.

The night is always centered on the theme of the new exhibition. The theme of the Met’s 2019 Costume Exhibition is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.”

Definitely not camp as in sleeping bags and tents 🤩, but camp as in exaggerated fashion. The exhibit is inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay that defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”

Lets see what the stars came up with;

Anna Wintour in Chanel

I’m starting with the doyen herself – Anna Wintour. She paid tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld in this Chanel creation, Anna revealed this was the last dress he made for her before his death. She has presided over the gala since 1995 and must approve every attendee on the guest list. Basically, you better be in Anna Wintour’s good books 🤐. She’s here because this is a really good look. Talk about oozing class…..

Joan Collins in Valentino.

How dare I not put her on my list! The legendary actress attended the gala as her character from her popular 80s series “Dynasty”. The big diamond on display, the feather instead of a purse! oh Joan, at 85 you still know how to make an appearance 💯.

Okay, now let’s get to The business now that I’m done with my honorary mentions 😁

Naomi Campbell in Pier Paolo Piccioli for Valentio Haute Couture

What an appearance from our favourite super model. The ageless model looked stunning as ever in this beautiful blush pink dress and shoes by the same designer.

Gigi Hadid in Michael Kors

Gigi Hadid is all sparkly in this Michael Kors jumpsuit with a custom made hat by Stephen Jones. She is also a favourite on the met red-carpet as she brings her A-game yearly. She certainly didn’t disappoint this year.

Emily Ratajkowski

I know she’s hardly covered 😶, but we’re used to seeing top models like this anyway. She made my list because she channelled Cher and she did it so well, being a lover of Cher, I simply can’t ignore that 😉.

Kendal Jenner in Versace

Whats not to love about this tango orange dress on Kendal 😍.

Poppy Delavingne in Dundas
Ashley Graham in Gucci

Ashely is on everybody’s worst dressed list but not on mine 😚. I normally don’t like monogrammed designer clothing but I actually really like this look on her. I think she pulled it off, don’t look at the back though…..🤐

Cardi B in Thom Browne

How breathtaking is this look from Cardi B. The rapper sure knows how to heat things up on the red carpet! This Thom Browne dress was made by 35 people and it took over 2,000 hours to create. She had 10 attendants from the designer to guide her on the carpet, need I say more… What an appearance! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Celine Dion in Oscar de la renta

Celine Dione rocked a Judy Garland inspired Oscar de la Renta dress on the pink carpet and what a glittering vision she was!

Ciara in Dundas

The body on Ciara though…She looked stunning in her emerald green Dundas dress.

Who needs one gown when you can have, two, or three or even nothing 😀. Gaga removed this beautiful robe on the carpet to reveal a black dress and then a pink hot number 👇🏾 and then decided she really didn’t need any clothing on and stripped to her undies, yes on the pink carpet! Oh, Gaga, the drama if it all…

Lady Gaga
Sara Sampaio in August Getty Atelier

I really like Sara’s look, exquisite 👌🏾.

Charlie XCX in Jean Paul Gaultier
Sinead Burke

How lovely did Sinead Burke look on the Pink carpet! She made history as the first little person to attend the MET Gala. Sinead is a teacher, writer, broadcaster, fashion admirer and advocate for disability and design. Basically, she’s a go-getter, barrier breaker, my kind of person 👌🏾.

Regina Hall in Gucci

Regina looked nice and elegant on the pink carpet. I could hardly find any sister doing it on the carpet yesterday, they were mostly blaaa 😋 to me, I mean what were they wearing, Kerry Washington, Tiffany Haddish, Lupita, Lala Anthony🤦🏾‍♀️. Anyway, good look Regina.

Lauren Santo Domingo in Proenza Scholer
Janet Mock in Alberta Fettetti
Doutzen Kroes in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture
Dua Lipa in Versace

Forget Dua Lipa’s boyfriend papped checking out Jlo’s Butt 🤫 and pay a little attention to her beautiful multi-coloured Versace dress. It was her Met gala debut and she did really well in this ensemble. The hair though 🤔 maybe that should go with the boyfriend 🏃🏾‍♀️🏃🏾‍♀️.

Gabrielle Union in Dundas

So many stars strode on the pink carpet in Dundas and Gabrielle was one of them. Did she deliver? Absolutely, I really like her edgy look 🙌🏾.

Eva Chen
Kylie Jenner in Versace

Kylie Jenner looks amazing in this violet Versace dress. I don’t always like her red carpet look but this certainly got my attention. She looks way older than her age though but what do I know 🤐 baby girl is doing really well for herself, keep smiling to the bank dear…

Zendaya in Tommt Hilfigher

How adorable does Zendaya look in her Cinderella-inspired outfit on the pink carpet? oh yes, the dress actually lit up 👇🏾, such a great pink carpet moment 💝.

Karen Elson in Proenza Schouler

I love Karen’s dress, the metallic/rust goes so well with her red hair. Love it.

Emma Roberts in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

Frills, frills and more frills… Emma looks every inch a princess fairy in her pink cherry blossom dress.

Here’s a look at my favourite couples and group pictures. Some dresses couldn’t make my best-dressed list standing alone but looked good coupled up (whether with a partner or friend), enjoy 😉.

Idris Elba & Sabrina Dhowre in Versace.

Marriage sure suits Sabrina well as I’ve never seen her look so good. Really nice looking couple.

Salma Hayek & Francois-Henri-Pinault

Salma looks nice in of-course Gucci. Her husband’s company manages the brand as well as some other big brands so no surprises here. They are a very good looking couple, they’re both in their 50s but look really good.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scot

Best I’ve seen both of them, they look really good…..

Alicia Kets & Swizz Beatz

“sounds y’all wanna hear, who dat? Swizz Beatz! 🤩 Love me some Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys. Swizz is always dapper at any time and Alicia, she’s got the natural look going on for a long time, though I want her to spice it up a little sometimes, I still love her 😊.

Katie Holmes and Jamie Fox

I like these two, I’m happy Katie is happy and really wish them the best, they’re even matching, cute 😚.

Jennifer Lopez & Alex Rodriguez

What a smoking couple 🎇, Jennifer dazzles in a sparkling Versace dress while Alex compliments her in a bubble pink suit jacket and black trousers. Stunning couple.

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady

These two! Can they ever not turn heads! They always heat up the red carpet and I’m not complaining.

Zoe Zaldana & Marco Perego

Bella Hadid & Jeremy Scot

Adut Akech & Pier Paolo Piccoli

Adut – who is currently one of the most sought after models in the world – walks the carpet in a Valentino Haute Couture dress designed by Pier Paolo Piccolo her pink carpet partner.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kim and Kanye are quite the couple on the pink carpet. She dazzles in Thierry Mugler in this dripping wet look.

Stefano Tonchi & Hikari Mori

Priyanka Chopra in Dior and Joe Jonas
Nina dobrev in Zac Posen & Zac Posen
Sophie Turner & Nick Jonas

I don’t even know why they’re on my list, maybe because they’re twinning 😁😁😁.

Gemma Chan in Tom Ford & Tom Ford

Another designer and his muse, we saw quite a number of that on the pink carpet. It’s actually a common occurrence at the met gala.

Emma Stone &
Nicolas Ghesqueière

Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton and her designer, Nicolas Ghesquière

Dwayne Wade & Gabrielle Union in Dundas
colin kaepernick & Nessa

Rita Ora in Marc Jacobs, Marc Jacobs and Kate Moss in Marc Jacobs

Spotted some nice looking men too 😉

Michael B Jordan

Michael always carries himself so well on any carpet, I’m a fan…

Lee Daniels

Our darling Serena Williams co-hosted with Lady Gaga and Harry Styles. While I didn’t really like her pink carpet look, I surprisingly liked the version when got on stage – and it’s from the same dress – don’t you just love fashion.

Don’t wonder what’s happening to my fashion taste, cause I’m wondering myself 😘.

Serena Williams in Versace

I hope you enjoyed my pick?

Aunty Lulu.
