Better Together: The Power of Shared Journeys

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:
If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Life is something we all must do. As long as we are alive, we have to live, and we have to find a way to do it well.

The older we get, however, the more we realise just how complex life can be.

As we journey through life, we encounter different obstacles, opportunities, distractions, and detours along the way—some more welcome than others. Through both the good and the not-so-good experiences, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: life is not meant to be done alone.

I believe God created us to work and walk with others. The perfect example is God Himself. We know Him as the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit—each fulfilling different roles while remaining one.

God’s Blueprint for Community

We also see this principle in the creation story. After creating everything so beautifully, God recognised that something was missing. “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” and He created woman. Jesus also modelled the importance of community by surrounding Himself with disciples and followers who shared in His ministry and mission.

As I journey through life, I have come to realise that investing in meaningful relationships is one of life’s greatest gifts. We all need people to celebrate our victories with and to walk beside us through life’s more challenging seasons.

We grow stronger, wiser, and more resilient when we journey together. We all need an Aaron to help hold up our hands, just as Aaron and Hur did for Moses. No matter how smart, gifted, or accomplished we are, we should not be doing life alone.

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Few sayings capture the importance of collaboration and community quite as well as this one.

We live in a world that often celebrates independence. From a young age, we are encouraged to be self-sufficient, pursue our individual goals, and carve our own paths. While there is certainly value in resilience and personal responsibility, life has a way of reminding us that we were never meant to do everything alone.

The truth is that some of our greatest accomplishments, happiest moments, and most important lessons come through our connections with others.

Collaboration Helps Us Achieve More

There’s a popular quote by Helen Keller:

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” There is so much more we can achieve when we open ourselves to collaboration.

Collaboration is simply the act of working together towards a common goal. Whether in business, career, ministry, family life, or community projects, collaboration allows people to combine their strengths, ideas, and resources.

No one person has all the answers, all the skills, or all the experience needed for every situation. One person may have the vision, another the technical expertise, and another the ability to bring people together. When these strengths are combined, the result is often greater than what any individual could achieve alone.

I experienced this firsthand with our podcast, Seriously Doughnuts.

How My Community Led Me to a Great Collaboration

I had been sitting on the idea for quite a while. I knew I wanted to create a visual platform for meaningful conversations, but I also knew I didn’t want to be talking to myself every week. The challenge was that I didn’t know how to get started or who I should embark on the journey with.

At the same time, I had been praying about it.

Then, through my wonderful school mums’ community, my lovely friend Stella introduced me to Bola Obileye. As we got to know each other, I became increasingly convinced that we would make a great team. The only problem was that Bola was already a successful woman with her own thriving talk show amongst other things. Why would she want to join me on this adventure?

Still, I felt a strong sense of peace about it, so I prayed and took the step of asking. Bola also prayed about it and felt similarly led.

And just like that, Seriously Doughnuts was born.

Looking back, I realise that the podcast became what it is because of collaboration. We each brought different strengths, perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table. Together, we created something that neither of us would have created in quite the same way on our own.

Sometimes an idea doesn’t need more planning; it needs partnership. Sometimes all that’s missing is another person whose gifts complement your own.

Think of a choir. A solo voice can be beautiful, but when different voices come together in harmony, something richer and more powerful is created.

Community Helps Us Thrive

While collaboration often focuses on achieving a goal, community is about belonging.

Community is the network of people who encourage us, challenge us, support us, and celebrate with us. It is found in families, friendships, neighbourhoods, faith groups, professional networks, and even online spaces where meaningful connections are formed.

Life’s journey is rarely a straight road. There are seasons of joy and seasons of difficulty. During those challenging moments, it is often community that sustains us. A kind word, a helping hand, a listening ear, or simply knowing that someone cares can make all the difference.

Here is an encouragement from the scripture,

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Galatians 6:2

The Myth of the Self-Made Person

We often admire stories of people who appear to have achieved success entirely on their own. Yet if we look closely, we usually discover mentors who offered guidance, friends who provided encouragement, family members who made sacrifices, and colleagues who contributed along the way.

Behind every visible success story is an invisible network of support.

None of us arrived where we are entirely by ourselves. In fact, we didn’t even come into this world by ourselves—our very existence is based on collaboration, if you get what I mean! 😜

Why Collaboration and Community Matter More Than Ever

In an increasingly connected yet sometimes isolated world, genuine collaboration and community have become even more important.

They expand our perspectives, encourage personal growth, provide emotional support and open doors to opportunities.

They also help us solve problems more effectively and most importantly, they remind us that we belong, that we are not alone. They help us carry life’s burdens and share its joys.

Building Better Together

Strong collaboration and meaningful community do not happen by accident. They require intentionality.

They are built through Trust, Respect, Generosity, Good communication and a willingness to both give and receive support

Healthy relationships flourish when people contribute, not just consume; when they celebrate one another’s successes rather than compete with them.

Find your people. Whether it’s your church family, friendship circle, school mums’ group, or another support network, intentionally nurture those relationships. One day you’ll need someone to laugh with, cry with, pray with, or simply help you carry the load.

Successful events require many helping hands. Community groups, churches, neighbourhoods, and organisations function because people contribute to one another. Everyone brings something different, and those individual contributions combine to create something far greater than the sum of their parts.

Barriers to Collaboration and Community

Some people are understandably cautious about collaboration or becoming part of a community.

Perhaps you’ve been hurt before. Maybe you’ve experienced disappointment, betrayal, or broken trust.

For others, it’s pride. “I can do it myself, I don’t need anyone, I don’t want people in my business.”

For some, it’s fear of vulnerability. For others, it’s concern about competition, comparison, or being taken advantage of.

These are all valid concerns. However, in most cases, there is far more to gain from healthy community than there is to lose.

The same can often be said for collaboration. Not every venture requires collaboration, but sometimes the very thing holding an idea back is the absence of the right partner.

If you’ve been sitting on an idea for years and can’t seem to figure out how to bring it to life, perhaps it’s worth considering whether someone else holds a piece of the puzzle you need.

A Little Word of Caution

“Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?”

Amos 3:3

While collaboration and community are wonderful, they should be entered into prayerfully and wisely.

Relationships can be complex. There is no meaningful relationship that won’t be tested at some point. That’s why it’s important to tread carefully and enter collaborations with clear eyes and a clear heart.

Values must align. Vision must align. Once that foundation is established, each person can bring their individuality, gifts, and dynamism to create something excellent.

The Bible also cautions against being unequally yoked. (2 Corithians 6:14).

Remember “Mummy Eve“? Had she avoided getting unequally yoked, I might still be relaxing in the Garden of Eden, stretched out on an elephant’s ear, sipping fresh coconut water while listening to a choir of birds singing love songs. 😜

On a serious note, when we become entangled with the wrong people, there can be consequences.

Prayer Before Partnership

This isn’t a call to become fearful or suspicious of everyone. Rather, it is a call to be prayerful, discerning, and wise. Seek God’s guidance, pay attention to His prompting, and don’t ignore red flags. The right relationships can be a tremendous blessing, but the wrong ones can be costly. So by all means, embrace collaboration and community—but do so with wisdom and caution.

The wrong voice, the wrong whisper, or the wrong advice can lead us into serious trouble. Remember, as human beings, we cannot truly see into a person’s heart. Some people are remarkably skilled at concealing their true character until the moment they choose to reveal it.

Very often, a person’s integrity is not fully tested until power, influence, or money enters the picture. This is why we need God’s wisdom and direction before entering into any significant relationship, partnership, or collaboration.

The Bible reminds us that “man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). It also warns us that “the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9, KJV). These verses serve as a reminder that appearances can be misleading and that not everyone who smiles with us has our best interests at heart.

Every community, partnership, and collaboration should be entered into prayerfully. Seek God’s guidance and wait for His direction before moving forward.

Building Meaningful Collaboration and Community

Once you’ve found the right community or the right person to collaborate with, don’t become a wallflower. Be willing to contribute, not just receive. Show up for others and look for ways to be helpful within the community. Appreciate the efforts of those around you and never take their contributions for granted.

Communication is key. Without honest, respectful communication, no relationship can thrive. Be open, be clear, and be willing to listen.. Communities thrive when people intentionally invest in one another.

A Final Thought

As I have journeyed through life, one lesson continues to stand out: the people around us matter.

The friends who cheer us on, the colleagues who share ideas, the mentors who guide us, the family members who support us, and the communities that embrace us all play a role in shaping our stories.

Success may be measured by individual achievements, but fulfilment is often found in shared experiences.

Because at the end of the day, we are stronger when we collaborate, richer when we belong, and truly better together.

“In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too), those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.” — Charles Darwin

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

As always, I’m cheering you on from my little corner of the world. May you find your tribe, value your village, and never forget that life is richer, lighter, and far more beautiful when we journey together. ❤️
